I have a 40 HP evinirude and an auxillary 9 hp. Out on the lake and headed back in rough conditions and big motor failed. It died and would restart but acted like it was starving for gas and would sputter and die. No one around and i started the small motor just to get off the lake. Same thing would start but then sputter and die. Finally got it going but had to choke it all the way to dock as waves were coming in the boat. Very scary. With both motors acting up could it be bad gas . I just filled the 25 gallons tank 2 weeks ago and have had it out 3 times and everything was fine until today. If the fuel pump then what are the chances of both motors acting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: almost died

are they running off of the same fuel tank? try to hook up a portable and then see how they run.

Re: almost died

Extremely rough conditions... possibly built in tank vent took on water

Pull the connector and pump some fuel into a jar. You'll see water/milky sludge on the bottom if contaminated. If so, get 'em running and warmed-up quick w/fresh fuel. They don't like water!

Yep, I'm betting on the same thing. Contaminated fuel.
