Re: Almost sank my boat at the dock this morning

I won't buy a pump under 100 bucks for the rear of the boat.... If I were to ever have problems with my I/O boot or hit ground with the I/O the rear would be the first to fill up. For me 1000 gph is MINIMUN in the stern. I did put a 15 dollar walmart 500 gph pump to pump the water into the stern though.... works great.

Re: Almost sank my boat at the dock this morning

I just re-wired my bilge pump to be able to turn the pump on manually as well as it having power from the battery thru the float switch. That way I can hit it from the dash anytime I need to over-ride the float switch. I tested my setup in a small swimming pool before I put it all in the boat, I am kind of paranoid like that. I have to see stuff like that working more than once before I can relax!

Have fun this summer :)

do you have any details on this? I thought I had mine right, but it only works off the float, not the manual override. sorry, dont mean to hijack the thread

Some of the Rule automatics (not the Rule-a-matic) use a circuit where they run for 1 second every 2.5 mins to check for water. No float switch, supposedly very reliable.

It's scary when you think that the whole boat, could be many $1000, is dependant on the integrity of small plastic parts from China worth less than $20. In addition to your pumps, that's all your through-hull fittings, sea cocks, etc.

I'm lost here. What small plastic chinese parts do you speak?

It would depend on the float switch you have. The float switch I have is wired for this type of override already. The wires are marked, and with the instructions it is fairly simple to wire in either way. Basically one wire goes to the dash switched power, and another wire goes to the battery. The other wiring feeds the pump power and ground.

I used a fusible link from the battery just in case something shorts out. Anything can happen, something can get thrown around back there and jam wires together, whatever. I like accessory wiring to be fused very close to the battery.
