well im in the home stretch now with my boat project. but i need some help with the tach and speedo.
good news from anyone who read my other post is i didnt destroy anything when i ran it without the hose for a minute like a dumbass.
anyways some other stuff i did- i was having intermittent problems where turning the key did nothing. as i suspected, it was nothing wrong with the engine, the wiring inside for the key switch and choke button were shot. with how little was left of those wires im amazed that lasted as long as they did. i didn't want to buy an all new wiring harness for close to $200, so instead i cut the old wires as close to the plug as i could (i wanted to save the plug because it still looked to be in great condition) and i picked up some marine grade wire and reattached to the switches, and inline soldered them in to the old wires, did some heat shrink and then some electrical tape for good measure. im gonna pick up some extra tubing to cover them further to protect from the elements. unfortunately i was unable to find exact wire colors to match so my brown wire is now green, among a few other changes (which i documented so i dont confuse myself later). well the new wiring is working great, engine starting right up without issues. the tach connector plug in the control box was shot as well and beyond salvage, so instead of trying to replace it i just ran the wires that would have connected to it straight out the front of the controls through the hole where the plug would have been.
next i picked up an aftermarket tach from a mercury specialist in my area who assured me it would work for my 1973 850 thunderbolt. i wired it up as instructed but with the engine running its not doing anything. the little lightbulb turns on but thats about it. i've seen some conflicting info on number of poles, some sources said 6 some said 4, so i've tried it with both, but no success either way. i'm not too clear on how exactly a tach works, but is this not working a symptom of another electrical component not working? is it possible just a bad connection somewhere? i thought wiring it up was pretty straight forward, did i screw it up somehow...?any tips or advice hugely appreciated
next is the speedo. i traced from the speedo a tube that comes off it and goes down towards my engine and... is just lying there in the bottom of my boat not attached to anything. i also can't for the life of me figure out where it even would attach. i've poured through my parts catalog for the motor and cant find anything speedometer related. i have however found the little hole on the front of the lower unit that i've read is supposed to be the water inlet for the speedo. any info on what i should be looking for to hook it up?
again thanks for any info. i apologize a few of my other posts i got super helpful responses that solved the problem and i never went back to my post to thank those individuals who helped me, so if any of those people are reading now, thank you!!

OK, your 850 is not going to have a speedometer Pitot (sender) on the lower unit. Speedometers like yours work on pressure caused by the movement of the water. You will need to buy a pitot and install it on the transom.

As for your tachometer. Early Mercs used Mercury specific tachometers, that counted pulses of the switchbox. They are not standard like the one you bought. If you look on your motor, trace the brown wire and see if it connects to the switchbox. Not the brown wire that goes to the distributor, by the way.

You will need to move the brown wire to connect to one of the yellow wires on your rectifier Your rectifier should be located in the starboard front of the lower cowling. It will have 3 wires, yellow, yellow and red. The brown wire should connect to either of the yellow wires.

You might punch up the wiring diagram for your motor and for a later year, say 1976 1150 and check out the brown wire connections. I chose the 1150 because it has the distributor ignition, that you have, so it is less confusing.

thanks for your response! sorry, to clarify are you saying that the tach i got wont work for this motor? or that it'lll only work if i make the wiring change you stated?
and attached are a couple more pics. so if im understanding correctly, i need to disconnect the brown wire from this part of the switch box, and reconnect it to one of the yellow terminals of the rectifier in the other pic? (the two red wires to rectifier were spliced in by previous owner to replace where insulation was falling off the originals). fortunately i've already got a wiring diagram for this model and year i've been referring to for some other stuff.

Pitots are standard for the speedo gauge, not the motor. Any one will work. Heck, sometimes Wallyworld will carry them.

Your tachometer will work with your motor, if the wiring change is made. Modern outboards (regardless of brand) use the pulses from the stator to drive the tachometer.

When your motor was made, it used a Mercury-specific tach. Those are either hard to find or not available. The universal tachs work very well.

The Merc setting is usually 12P or 6C, whatever your tach has. She will idle in neutral at about 1000RPM, so you can use that to guess which setting is correct.

perhaps i spoke too soon. at neutral idle the tach shows around 1000prm, shift into forward it drops down to 500-600, but it wont go above about 2000. wide open throttle when im pushing 30mph its still only showing 2000rpm. the engine is CLEARLY pushing around 5000rpms just based on the sound. the tach has settings options of 1-6 so i have it set to 6. any thoughts on what the issue could be?
just picked up a pitot, gonna install it and test it out first chance i can get the boat on the water.

Go on the tachometer's manufacturers web site and look up Mercury and see what setting they recommend. Just about all Mercs use the same setting.
