Hi all
I hope this finds you all well.
I had some gear oil leaking from the drain hole of my Alpha 1 Gen 1 Stern Drive, shift seal I first thought. I split casings and noticed it was from the other suspect, the lower pump housing, so I pulled it out to replace.
The oil was clear, so it seems no water got in, hopefully. Here's my question though.....
With the pump housings off I turned the drive shaft whilst in forward, it wriggles about a little as well. I expected a nice smoothish feel when turned, in addition I didn't expect it to be able to be lifted by appox 1/4". So when I turn the drive shaft (this is not easy to describe in writing) it is very notchy against the gears. If I lift it whilst turning it, it smooths out a little. I can't see how it would lift when installed with the upper housing, only pushed down further. The prop shaft is turning OK but the pinion gears feal really notchy.
Does anyone know if this is correct?
