No I don't think the shift linkage in the two will swop.the shift rods of these units are diffent, and won't mate properly. Also if you are swapping complete drives,I don't think the shift linkage will mate.

DHP

Nothing is interchangable between the older Alpha's and the Gen II's

Just tried that a week ago.

The Gen 2 is about 4-5mm wider than the gimbal ring horns which guides the drive as it tilts up and down, it won't go in. This extra is after you remove the 2 plastic wear plates on the sides. Overall its close to 9mm wider. This will be your biggest problem, you can throw away the plastic pieces and mill off the extra thickness.

Ths shift shaft lever from the lower unit will not reach the upper shift shaft, its about 1-1.5 inch short. Don't know if the upper shift shaft from the Gen 2 can fit, maybe?? - the bushings look the same.

The 6 bolt holes fit. Water interface at the bell housing fits. The Remote Oil Resvervior will meet a blank on the bell housing side.

Did fit it on in the tilted position to clear the gimbal ring, ran engine, everything seems ok. didn't proceed beyond that as it can be an expensive experiment - Gen 2 drive murder is not cheap :D
