Alpha 1 drain plug-no seal???

I replaced the fluid in my Alpha 1 sterndrive on my 78 Wellcraft and I noticed the drain plug had no seal. Do they ALL have seals? It didn't leak, and it wasn't milky like there was any water intrusion. I know this boat originally came with a pre alpha drive, but the PO installed a different gimbal ring and I believe an entire Alpha one.

Am I missing something here?

yes it should have a seal but it is common for the seal to stick in the housing when you remove the plug. its easy to get them out with a o-ring pick
if you can order or get some its not a bad idea to keep them on hand. there not very expensive and i don't like to reuse them

as to the water you might want to pull the prop and make sure you don't have fish line warped on the shaft and cutting out the seals

there are 2 seals back to back. one keeps water out and the other keeps oil in

The oil looked great, NO water or metal shavings.

I looked really good in the oil pan when I removed the plug and it wasn't in my pan. I should have broken out a mirror and looked, didn't really feel anything.
I am going to assume it is still in the housing, as it's not leaking.

I WILL pick up some seals tomorrow and see what's what. If I leave the vent plugged when I remove the drain plug , I shouldn't lose to much gear oil, right?

No problemo, I write like a waterhead sometimes.

I looked at my adapter on my oil changer and no seal there.

Forget about the old seal, just make sure to put a new one every time. You do have to open the vent to fill and burp it. Put a new seal on that one too.

You can't just forget about the old seal. You MUST make sure it's completely gone, not just part of it. Double seals almost always leek. Make sure the old ones are not stuck in the drive or on the plugs themselves.

Right you are. Skargo, you checked the plug and your filling pump but not the gear case. I found clear plastic ones on my Evinrudes mashed into the gear case. They were hard to see and no wonder they leaked.
