alpha 1 gen 1 upper gears

If you have a matched set of gears with the correct shims and all set up correctly in a housing and then you removed the gears and the shims and top cap but install the whole show in a different housing without changing any shim setup ; What result could you expect?

Do the cases differ from one to another to screw up the setting of the gears?

Sure they change.

Gears are generally the same. Housings just come close. Rear ends in cars/trucks are the same way. Shims could/will be different.

the whole idea of shimming is to position everything correctly within manufacturing tolerances in the parts - bearings, gears, housings....no 2 are identical, but all should be within tolerance specs.

I have found that of all the parts, bearings are by far held to the closest tolerances. 8 times out of 10, you can change bearings and reuse original shims and case and be right on. But swap cases, or gears, no way. And ALWAYS check with the proper tools

thanks so very much for the responces. I have several outdrives and would like to put parts and gear sets together to make a three or 4 good ones. Plus I would like learn how to set gears up and the step by step instructions in the manual are great so I think I will have fun trying this.

What are the tools required for upper gear work and the lower gear work. I have looked for posts with this info and cant find the one I read several months ago. Some of the special tools are just standard seal and bearing drivers and pullers etc. If somone could give me a list of what I will need that would be great.

By the way I made a 12" retainer wrench out of 1/4" plate steel just like in the manual except I made slots instead of points to catch the ring. should I heat treat it? The other question I have in this area is acording to manual 6 there is a schedual for torque; Based on the length of the torque wrench you are using they give you the correct setting to arrive at 200 ft-lbs at the ring. Are these modified setting for the torque wrench based on a 12 " retainer wrench? It doesn't exactly say.
