Hello, just got a used boat with the mercruiser 5.0 i/o setup. Just wondering how / if you can test / check the lower end water pump without pulling it apart..... possible? It's a new lower unit (just rebuilt) so that would have been done I assume?

Thanks
Dave

to test if it works you can apply a set of muffs and a garden hose. turn on the water start the engine and see if it spits out watter from the exhaust ports. if it does then impellor is working. if not, shut engine off and you will have to go in and look or replace

The only way to actually test the pump is to put the drive in the water and check the output of the pump, and compare it to the manual.
Using muffs, you could still cool an engine with the hose pressure. something you won't get in the water.

Thank you for the info. The exhaust ports are right below the gimble bearing part... lower transom, correct? There is water coming out of there.

How do you check the output when in the water please? How do you measure it?

I think what you were trying to tell me is put the outdrive in a BIG bucket and test it that way? But what do you mean compare it to the manual. What kind of measurement, PSI?

This is from an engine manual using an Alpha I Gen II outdrive.
