2009 Mercruiser 5.0 L TKS Alpha 1 Gen 2 drive 140 Hrs about 1/2 the time I go for first trip of the day when engaging forward gear at 1,000 rpm or less I often get a slight double clunk before full forward is fully engaged . I presume the remote shift cable needs adjustment . It only seems that this happens on the first shift of the day into forward , no issues in reverse .Roughly speaking how much of an adjustment to the remote shift cable barrel do you think I should need to give it a full initial engagement into gear .I followed Shift Cable Installation Alpha Models Drive Unit Installed from internet , my unit has a simple 2 cable system , the remote shift with shift assist and the cable going to the sterndrive .The instructions for standard RH drive read : Remove remote shift cable and shift assist assembly , ensure shift lever adjustable stud is at bottom of slot.Shift remote control into Forward gear past detent into WOT position , Place drive unit into gear by pushing in on drive unit shift cable while simultaneously rotating prop counterclockwise until shaft stops. This will ensure full clutch engagement , maintain a light pressure on the drive unit shift cable to hold it at the end of travel this removes all slack. Then lightly pull on remote shift cable end guide to remove slack from remote control and cable ( I had about 1/8" of slack ) now adjust plastic barrel on the remote cable to align attaching points with shift lever clevis pin hole and the stud .When I adjusted the barrel so that connection points lined up while the drive unit cable was in fully I had to move the barrel toward the helm probably a good 3/16" of an inch . It tests fine when in neutral prop spins freely and fully engages in reverse and forward in the driveway but havent done water test yet . Any comments ?
