I'm trying to troubleshoot a shift issue with my alpha 1 gen 2. Question: Is it possible to have a remote shift cable (the one from the helm to the engine) measure within spec (3 inches plus/minus 1/8 inch) and still be bad? Mine is 24 years old with 1,750 hours but still measures good.

Normally the throttle shift cable doesn't go bad because the throttle just moves a tad more to complete the shift. What kind of shift problem are you having?

I had a new shift cable installed this spring along with bellows, trim pucks etc. Got lazy and paid a shop to do the work because I'm 66 and figured this would be my last go round. It was fine early in the season, all was shifting well. Now I get this message on vessel view mobile and the motor is stumbling and slowly stalling at idle. The other day I re-did all the shift adjustments, I followed exactly what Chris does in his YT video. The interrupt plunger is in the middle of notch in all 3 gear positions, at least is when sitting on the trailer. Today I ran it on muffs and things seemed good IMG_4018.PNGalthough I thought I heard a faint stumble or two. Took it to the ramp and no luck, still slowly dying at idle. Won't respond to throttle in neutral when this starts happening.

Your probably going to want to perform the test on page 3 of 3 jumping the shift switch,

If the test appears to fix the issue, let us know…. Hint, be prepared tool wise to temporarily remove the complete shift plate assembly off of the engine and go for another test run there after to see if the problem seems better with the wire harness connector re-connected. Vibration may be part of the issue on this one.

Thanks for the reply Fun Times. I'll replace the cap/rotor. I've done it before, pretty easy job. Concerning the jumper wire, the SB confuses me. Why does it say if the wire fixes the problem it's the interrupt switch then says to replace the ECM, not the interrupt switch? The ECM is NLA correct?

I like where it said to replace the very expensive ECM like us boaters have tons of cash. Why not send the ECM out for recalibration?

Fun times hasn't responded but that's why I ask why it says the problem is the interrupt switch but then it tells us to replace the ECM??? Maybe I'm mis-reading it.

Bear in mind this SB is more intended to take care of a just realized manufacturing, limited time “warranty” work for anyone experiencing odd issues that can’t be found after inspection of a lot of other possibilities beforehand and not really meant for general boating forum websites especially back then in 2003.

They identified where a problem lies throughout the whole system with a possible few repair areas/ideas and warrantied the main internal issue and making the repair as easy as possible for all in the moment by just swapping ECM’s that are calibrated correctly for the shift interrupt system.

Back then dealer recalibration was more or less just starting out to where not everyone was fully equipped plus trained enough to perform/accomplish the task so swapping was easier for them still depending on who’s working on it and where if it was even possible for the event being discussed… < I’m not sure honestly…

This test recommendation only came after noticing the year and serial number range and drive application and while the symptoms might not be an exact worded match in the bulletin, in the past I had seen different odd issues where this test helped so while it’s not a guarantee, it’s an easy to try test to eliminate a possibility should you make your next boating trip a concentrated find and fix it type trip vs say an entertainment family day outing.
If this where to be the problem, it was once mentioned by a Merc warranty authorization tech representative that the issue might be resolved if the shift plate assembly were to be moved off the engine and mounted say on the transom of the boat as the ECM was supposedly seeing to much movement/vibration and adjusting accordingly due to miss calibration.
I never tried the described vibration theory, so I cannot verify a guarantee to it.. could it be a bad switch if the test plays out, maybe.🤷
