Hello I am a newbie to boating with inboards. I have a Alpha One Outdrive which is a new unit and first time in the water. I was boating yesterday and when I pulled the boat out of the water I heard the lower dragging on the ground. I am able to move the unit freely up and down by hand with no resistance with rams. The pump still sounds off when trimming up and down as well as the trailering button but does not move the lower unit of course. I understand I will have to find the leak souce and repair as well as adding 10w30 to the resevoir. My question is, Would this of damaged the pump as I was sill using the trim throughout the day thinking it was working, Or? And is there a special way to bleed this or is it self bleeding through the vent? Its very stormy right now and I would like to pick a couple brains for your input before I start this repair. " As a note there was no fluid leaked in the bildge compartment. I would appreciate some expertise on this as per my owners manual is very vague on the topic.

Are you sure about adding 10W30 to the trim pump resivior? I don't have a brand new boat like you do, but if I recall, the fluid in the hydraulics is not motor oil, but a certain kind of ATF. On the other hand, perhaps I'm uninformed.
Regardless, perhaps this is a job for a mechanic. On a new boat that is undoubtably under warranty, you may risk invalidating your warranty if you incorrectly perform repairs on this.

Re: Alpha 1 out of fluid question

The boat is a 1986 Centry with 37 original hours kept in storage since 1996....The Alpha 1 outdrive is new from a insurance claim from 3 years ago due to theft at marina storage, never run except to test in 2007. My original owners manual suggest 10w30...Is this wrong? or has there been a upgrade to fluid. No Warraty left on outdrive...Soooo any thoughts on the original questions Anybody? Thanks in advance before I start the project.

I doubt its damaged the pump, but theres only one way to find out...

10w30 motor oil is fine and it should self bleed, just run the trim from full down to full up a few times and then check and top up the oil level again.

Refilled unit and it works again, There is a leak on the 7/8" nut on the actual pump.
