Alpha 1 Outdrive install help

Hi,
I am having a little bit of a problem reinstalling stern drive. Once installed all is well except I cannot get shift cable move more than 1/4 inch either way. When I take the drive off the cable is fine. Am I missing something with the shift slide as I reinstall outdrive. That is the part that seems to be sticking and not moving once drive is installed.
Drive is aligned correctly and shifted in forward to mate sift shoes correctly.

Do you have the outdrive itself in forward and have put counter clockwise pressure on the prop driveshaft until is clear its locked into forward, before you install it?

Yes, I do. I can even see with an inspection mirror that the shoes are mated. Yet, with the drive an inch from mating to the bell housing, I try to move the shift slide and it seems jammed.

make sure shift fork and roller are aligned

That;s what the problem is. The shift shaft jumps out of the shift slide. I tried using the little orange helper to hold the slide, but nada. Any suggutions anyone.
