I have a 1995 Bayline Capri, 3.0 Alpha1-Gen2. Last winter I took the drive into the marine dealer to have a seal replaced and they had a hard time getting it to pass the pressure test. Come to find out the seal around the drive shave was bad, when they pulled the shaft it was corroded. They wanted around $700 to replace the shaft, my other option was to have them clean up the corrosion and install the new seal where it contacted a different part of the shaft which worked and it held pressure. Anyway Now I loose about a cup of drive oil per day on the water and i'm assuming it's in the bellows because it's not on the ground or inside the boat. My question is does anyone have a suggestion where I can purchase a new shaft at a reasonable price, I think the Mercruiser dealer price was around $550, which seems high to me.. And is there anything in particular I need to be aware of when purchasing a shaft,, like differences in the splines,, or the length of the shaft?? I'd hate to get the wrong one.. Thanks..

First find where it's leaking.Did you re-assemble the drive yourself(lower to upper)? The price from the dealer is for NEW!!!Try aftermarket places like here or Sierra. There are a lot of salvage yards you might get a good deal.Jerry

The yoke is less than $100 from mercruiserparts.com. It's part number is -49020T. But without the right tools, and the manual, I would not be doing this myself.

The last time it was touched was by the dealership,, they put all new seals in it and pressure checked it,, that was about 4 months ago. I plan on having them install the new shaft due to the special tools required but was trying to save some $$ by purchasing the parts myself.. Thanks..

i'd check with your service dept. some shops don't like the customer to provide parts. they'll get their money in the end anyways as the labor will go up and you won't know it... the installer may not warrente the parts or labor too as the installer(dealer) didn't have control over the parts you supplied.... just food for thought....
