I purchase my boat last fall- replaced all the zincs this spring. Since I did not have much left of the old zincs to compare- I replaced with what I thought should be there. Last week just after coming off plane I heard a ting-ting-ting noise- turns out the zinc behind the prop was loose and hitting the blades (no damage)- removed it anyways. Went to the Mercr dealer and found out that the zinc "fin" type is not necessary on power steering models- they gave me a flat zinc to protect the drive- but said that is usually for Bravo counter rotating type drives only---?? any input is appreciated. It is a 1987 drive with a 2002 V8 260.

With a larger prop it is common to see the flat plate. Your basic choice if you think your handling is changed then go back to one.

Bob

All I can tell you is West Marine has a catalog with pictures of all the various types of zincs. Maybe that will help you select the right one. I also wonder (because I have to replace mine and can't find the right one) if you couldn't just get a generic on that clamps on the OD anywhere??? Wouldn't that do the same job??????

The size of the fin will also determine how much protection you get for the time the boat is in the water.I recommend putting on the largest fin that does not interfere with the prop. You must put loctite or some sealant on the threads and make it as tight as you can so it does not loosen up as yours did.The flat zinc will get you minimum protection.Been there-done that except I lost my zinc all together.Sometimes we learn the hard way.Charlie

I had (and still have) the fin type zinc on my alpha one - I had clearance problems when I changed props. I just notched the zinc a little and everything clears.

Isn't the only reason for the fin to correct torque steer? my A1 G2 has flat plate. if boat has power steering flat should be fine right? also in fresh water use Mg not Zn.
