Alpha Gen 1 Sppedometer

I have an 89 Mercruiser with the Alpha one Gen 1 outdrive, the speedometer doesn't work, I've seen several threads about the gen 2 having the pickup on the leading edge above the torpedo...

The only hole I can see in mine is a hole in the side (see pic), so is this the pickup for the speedometer?

That is the drain for the drive. You need a separate pickup if you have the gen 1.

One of these?

From the looks of it this boat has never had one of these mounted, How did the Gen 1 speedometer work from the factory if something like this is required?

Sorry for the dumb questions, kinda boat illiterate here lol

Yes that is the pickup. It might not have ever worked.

The generation two pitot tubes(in the drive housing) usually get plugged up after a while too, resulting in folks attaching traditional pitot tubes and simply hooking up the sending tube to the transom mounted pitot tube.
