alpha gen 2 getting too hot?

I just got done changing gear ratios on my outdrive followed the procedure. When I ran a test on the boat with the muffs the top of the drive got up to
132 degrees @ 2500 rpm for five min run test. Does anyone think that's too hot? Opinions would be great thanks. Mark

By nature, those Alpha 1's do run warm. If you look around you will notice that a LOT of them run drive showers as added cooling especially on the go-fast type boats. Another thought, since you ran it on the muffs, you also lost the cooling of the gear case would have had by being immersed in the water.

Personally, I would think that you are on the edge of running too hot, but then again I'm not a Merc mechanic. I'm sure that someone with a tad more knowledge will post up soon.

I think I'm going to pull a couple thousands off the shims and see what happens thanks for the reply

(an example) i've only shimmed once. the drive gear yoke on my mc-1. i did it with a mercruiser shim tool. my spec was .025". when it got down to it. .024" went in to easy. .026" would barley start in the slot. .025" went in just right. if i adj. the shims these values changed and were incorrect and were noted by what feeler gauge would pass and what wouldn't. .025'' being the goal in my case...

my guess is if you start messing with taking a few thousands off or adding a few, or 'whatever'. you'll likely have a catastrophic event with your drive. best i understood. it's either right or you have a catastrophic event with the drive when it comes to shimming. hopefully you have a service manual which has the proper method for adjusting shims in it so you can adj. them proper and not have a catastrophic drive event...

fwiw, my drive gets hot enough to boil water off it as it leaves behind the white minerals deposits behind... so they do run warm..

You are also breaking in a new gear set. The longer you run it the better it will get.

Good info thanks. I'll leave it the way it is and give it a sea test. I used shimtools and inch pound torque settings. But don't want to have a melt down if you know what I mean.

Put the boat in the lake last night. Ran it fast and slow and the hottest it got was 154 degrees the drive has a faint whine to it when you get right up to it. You can't here it from in the boat. Do you think this is normal. Also clear oil no metal .
