Hey Guys,

I put the ol' Sea Ray on the muffs this afternoon to warm her up before hitting the water after a long week of work. Everything goes without a hitch until I shut her off and raise the outdrive for trailering. 2 minutes later I see a quarter-sized spot of gear lube coming from the front of the lower unit?! WTF?

Here's a visual of where it was coming from, and it's the ONLY location:

Oil Leak.jpg

I drained the oil (which was over a quart, blackish green, and had zero evidence of water) and proceeded to split the lower unit. There is a light coating oil from the area of the feed tube (yes the little seal was there), over the back half of the water pump, and then some down near the new shift shaft seal. Not puddles of oil but enough to get your fingers green. The drive shaft was dry but I did discover the first upper seal was shot, due to apparently being put in backwards!

Anyway, any ideas what might've caused this leak? I've been running her most every weekend and today was the first time I'd seen any oil...

Thanks,
TVB

Remove the outdrive, drain the gear lube, and do a pressure test of the drive. Use a spray bottle with soapy water to find the leak. The leak will blow bubbles.

OK, that compells the question: How do you pressure test with the unit split in two? What do you securely plug the oil channel with?

I use a piece of 2X2 , 2- c clamps and a piece of rubber. [from an old bike innertube]... Others have said just put a finger over the hole, they have MUCH stronger fingers then I do...

FYI, the pressure test revealed that the lower shift shaft seal ("new" this past June) was failing at about 10PSI.

This time that sucker's gonna be OEM!

No more screwed up weekends for me due to "Kung Pao" parts!
