I just acquired on a trade for a trailer a 1995 Alpha I Gen 2 upper and lower with 600 hours by original owner. Came with a 4.3liter and 1.84 ratio. I have a 1973 165hp and know the upper will not bolt up to my bell housing. Will the lower mate to a Alpha I Gen 1 upper? Doesn't look like it will.
I know of the location of a good 1973 MC1 upper with the 1.65 ratio that I can get from a shop that will pressure test it and put in new seals if it needs them for $350. I am thinking of offering to trade the Alpha I Gen 2 upper in trade for the 1.65.
Is this a fair trade?
What is the value of a very good A 1 Gen 2 upper?

Nope, not even close.

What is the value of a very good A 1 Gen 2 upper?

Brand new upper from SEI with a 3 year warranty is $745. Used, and basically untested (you really don't know if it's good or not, let alone very good) not near that much. Should be listed as well used, maintenance unknown.

the Alpha1 Gen 2 came from guy who bought new and pulled of his homemade wooden boat after 15 years and it developed wood damage from sitting in the lake. Fresh water use only. One thing does bother me: it had been lying on its side for over a year and when we stood it up oil came out the prop and water inlet where you put the muffs. Any thots?

Condition unknown. Upper doesn't show the corrosion the lower does. Water and oil leaks.
Dude, you got hosed on that deal. The trailer was worth more than the drive.

I paid $450 for boat, Alpha 1 gen 1 drive on boat, and trailer.
Sold trailer for $400 plus the drive and 2 props.
I am out $50 net.
Have good Gen 2 upper to sell or trade
Have Gen 2 lower that needs seal, will need to pressure test to be sure, PO said it didn't leak when in use.
Have good Gen 1 upper after resealed, gears look great.
Have good Gen 1 lower needing nothing.
Now to put together something that will make my old 1973 Aristocraft go like new again.

No you don't. Or at least not by your description so far. You have an upper that looks ok from a picture. You have no clue about what is inside, and think because the PO said it was ok you assume it's good? .......................... I would assume the PO got rid of his junk at your expense.
