Alpha I Gen I Drive Shaft Housing Question

I had gear lube in my bellows, therefore I decided to change the oil seal. I've removed everything and I've changed the seal (U Joints also), and I've reassembled the drive gear through the retainer (a-j in the picture). I've tightened the nut far enough to where there isn't any play. Before I started torquing the nut, I was told by one of the mechanics at my local marina that I do not have to do a rolling torque because I didn't do anything to the bearings or pull any cups. He told me to just torque the nut to whatever ft/lb it says in the manual and I'll be good to go. Is this accurate? The only thing I replaced is the oil seal and the o rings. The drive is a 1983 Alpha I Gen I, geared for a 260 hp Mercruiser.

Completely incorrect. Having removed the nut, you must set the torque up again using the prescribed method.

On an 83 gen 1 I understood that it was not ROLLING torque but 80-90 lbs and run it,am I incorrect?

Yep. If someone has replaced the gears or bearings, then it will be the rolling torque method.

no

you torque the nut to 70 lb/ft ONLY if there is a spacer between the bearings

if there is no spacer you MUST use the rolling torque method regardless if bearings were replaced

I have a spacer in between the bearings. I've attached a picture. Can someone clarify this as the manual says both. And Chris, can I use a needle torque wrench as I don't have that tool you use in your (http://youtu.be/lPr4UQPMBXg) video?

no pic seen

but...if you do have a spacer then you torque the nut to 70 lb/ft and you're done

That's a SMALL spacer (inside), not the large one that you can see when the bearing pack is assembled...

Here's the picture of the small spacer. It was inside of the bearings. With there being a small spacer, am I to do rolling torque or just torque the nut to 70 ft/lbs and go?

here's a pic of the brg set layed out. pic is of a mc-1, but your alpha1 should be the same.



the small spacer is 3rd from the left.
if ya have one of them. ya use the straight up torque and dubs is correct imho.
