I have a Merc manual for my drive so I just need help identifying where I take care of this symptom.

When I put it in reverse to back away from trailer or whatever, and I slide it into neutral, the shifter will click into the neutral position but the drive is still in reverse.

I have to push harder forward on the neutral stop to get it to come out of reverse.

Doesn't do it all of the time, but has done it a few the last few outings.

Please point me in the right direction -- where to do the adjustment and tighten or loosen.

2001 4.3L EFI w/ Alpha I Gen II. 180 hours.

Thanks!

Starting on page 2A-13 of the Mercruiser is detailed steps on adjusting the cable. If you follow them step by step, you will get the adjustment done properly.
If you don't have the Mercruiser manual, click here for section 2 from the manual.

Thanks, Don. Yes, I have the #14 manual. Thanks for the link, though. I will look over that section and implement the change.

Some are available on-line.

Start here

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/mainmenu.pdf

And start browsing. I only see the Alpha, Bravo, and a couple of engines. The other links appear to be broken. The interface is not very intuitive. Look for red boxes / rectangles or cursors that change from hands to pointers. Then once you get to your particular manual, you will have to click on each chapter and print. One thing that I like with the pdf file is that they sometimes have two colors. It makes it handy to distinguish drawings that have ballons that are difference colors than the part.
