"I changed all the fluids before I parked it for the winter."<br /><br />Did you leave the leg in the up position, and if so was it parked where it could be rained on?

If you live where it gets below freezing.......well, that ain't good. ALWAYS store the drive in the down position or remove it and store it inside during the winter. Pure speculation on my part, but the lower gear casing may have cracked on ya. Drain the gear oil and do a pressure test on the drive.

Alpha I leaking outdrive fluid. Please help

Well I just got my boat put all back together and I lowered the outdrive down and let it sit there for a while. Water drained out if it so I knew that was normal. One of my friends noticed a blue substance next to the puddle. At that point I knew it couldnt be good. It was definatly outdrive grease. When I looked over the outdrive I noticed where it was comming from. There are 2 fins, one of which the skag is hooked up to. In between these is a hole may aybe 1/4 inch round? Please tell me that this outdrive isnt damaged. I am hopping i just over filled it. I have not run the boat yet so I am not sure what is going to happen. I changed all the fluids before I parked it for the winter. One thing that I didnt do was run anti-freeze through the outdrive. I ran the motor. then I drained all the water out of the block and filled it with the antifreeze. I have no idea what is going on here. I just hope that it is minor. Please help me!!

I am guess the leg is the outdrive. Yes it was in an upright positin. It was also parked out in the elements covered up. the outdrive was not covered. I have pictures of the outdrive and where i saw the fluid leak out

Ahh ****.... Nothing is cracked on the outside. If you know what I am talking about with the holes on the outdrive. I can see throug them and see into the drive unit. I am wondering if something poped out. If I check the fluid and run it to see if anything leaks will that be okay? I wish i could post a picture to show you

DAYUM!!! ......where's Don when ya need him? Ok, first things first. What boat and outdrive do you have? The holes that I "think" you're talking about are just drain holes to allow water to drain, no kinda plug per se.

I have a 1993 Bayliner Capri 1750CU with an Alpha I outdrive unit. There are holes on either side and are both identical. I am thinking they are drain holes as well but why would outdrive grease come out?

I put a new floor in, new seats, new carpet, new guages, wakeboard tower. I put in 3 grand over the winter. If the outdrive is busted i think I will cry. I'm only 23 so its not like I got money growing out of my ears

Ok. So other than changing the fluids you didn't go into the drive then, correct? As I said before, I'd drain the fluid and do a pressure test just to see before I'd do anything else. If Don or Bondo or Rodbolt will catch onto this thread, maybe they'll give ya more info or advice.

I'll have to try that. I hate to drain the grease tho because its so damn expensive, but you gotta do what you gotta do i guess. To your previous posting, I did not take the outdrive appart. I dread taking it apart.

Suppose i do a pressure test and the leak is on the inside. What would I do in this case?

Re: Alpha I leaking outdrive fluid. Please help

I had the exact same thing happen to me this spring. It was the first time I winterized an I/O. My biggest fear was a cracked block. The engine was fine but I had a puddle of lower unit fluid on the ground when I picked the boat up. I took it to the local boat mechanic and they pressure tested it. They found a bad shift shaft seal. <br /><br />Of coarse it's one of those deals, since it's apart probably should get all the little things fixed at the same time. So they replaced the impeller, gimbal bearing, worn out trim sender, speedometer sender, etc. The cool thing is at the moment all my gauges work. So the final bill was $500.00.<br /><br />Hope that helps,<br /><br />Jeff
