Alpha II stern drive gear shift cable

I had to remove stern drive to pull motor. How can I tell if I broke the gearshift cable in the process? Is it pretty easy to replace?

'93 mercruiser 4.3L

Here is a photo. I am not sure what the piece is called that is attached to the transom, however in the picture you see the piece sticking out of it. I was told this was the gear shift. It is sold. Was this piece supposed to pull out like this when I pulled the stern drive off?

Also, I guess there is a water tube to the left that looks like it is full of a oil mess.. Can I just run degreaser through it and rins with garden hose?

Ayuh,.... By the looks of things, ya ain't broken anything,... Yet....

Yer in over yer head,... Ya gotta learn what yer doin', by readin',... Or call a Mechanic...

looks like it was in neutral when the drive was removed, also there should be no pry marks on the housing.
like bondo says, find the manuals and start reading BEFORE you start breaking expensive things.
