I have a 1985 Celebrity bow rider with a 5.7 .. Can't find the coil... could it be the square box on top of the distributor cap?

You better hope not, that's an automotive distributor. Not marine rated for either safety (explosion hazard) or the proper advance characteristics.

Somebody has replaced your dizzy with an automotive one. They are NOT to be used in a boat. Big BOOMS can result. I would also check the starter, alternator, carb and fuel pump. These all are marine specific and NOT interchangable for safety reasons.
FWIW, yes the coil is on top of the dizzy.

It would be a very good idea to replace that entire distributor with a new one rated for marine.

Also if you can't tell the difference on your fuel pump, alternator, or starter maybe take some pictures and post em here. There are special spark arresting screens in the electrical items that can produce spark.
