He was quoting the price for just the upper. You can buy either the upper or lower - or the complete unit.

Like was mentioned above, the grit, debris, etc from the upper has at the very least contaminated the lower as well.

It is literally cheaper to buy a new unit than to rebuild yours - since you have to get a specialized set of tools. If you enjoy rebuilding things and learning as you go - then go for it! It may or may not be successful, but if you enjoy it, then the process should be fun and educational.

If however, the main goal is simplicity and dollars and cents and getting back on the water... then you will either need to buy a new outdrive - or take the gamble on a used one.
