Alpha One Gen 1 shift?

I have a 1985 Formula with a 5.7 Mercruiser and Alpha one drive. When the engine is trimed up and shifted into reverse the prop will spin (spining by hand) and just click. When I trim the drive down it locks into gear. I am just curious if the shift linkage may need to be adjusted? This occurs while with just the normal trim. It seems to only be in gear when it is all the way down. I had the boat out yesterday and it seemed fine but I had the drive down all the way when I was docking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to a tutorial on lower shift cable checking and adjusting. It could require changing the cable, it's a common repair. http://www.mercstuff.com/images/shiftcable.jpg
