On a Carver Santego 30 (1988) with dual controls connected to a pair of Alpha One Gen 1 drives (5.7) Three seasons ago, I changed the lower shift cables (they were closed to being seized up!) and after adjustment, all of the lower shift cable operations and measurements were in spec.
In the last season, I've had a bit of trouble getting into reverse where I need to give it an extra bump past idle to get into gear. As far as I know, the Idle Reverse position should have been the maximum travel of the upper shift cable to get into gear so this was surprising. I assumed that the upper shift cable was worn so replaced that last week. During replacement I inspected the operation of the control and noted that the shift cable travels more past the idle position both in the forward and reverse directions. Is this expected? If not, are there adjustments to be made? Any other recommendations?
Here's a video describing the behavior:
