I have a 2003 Mercruiser 4.3L with an Alpha One Gen 2. My skeg is broken and i was wondering if it is possible to replace the lower unit with another one. My alpha one serial #OM449828 1.81R gearing and i have another alpha one serial #OL183181 2.00R. Possible to replace it with the 2.00R lower unit?

Why not get your skeg repaired for about $50?

You don't have to replace your lower unit. You can get a welding shop to weld a new skeg on your lower unit. After they grind the weld and spray paint it you will never know that it was broken. A skeg acts like a rudder and also helps to protect your prop from hitting objects. There is a bolt on skeg that you can purchase for around $100 as long as you have enough area left on your lower unit for the bolts. I'm not too sure about the two different gear ratios. you can check this article out in the link below. I hope this helps.

Ayuh,.... If both drives are Gen.II drives, yes the lowers will swap without issues,....

The gear ratio goes with the Uppers,....
