Tried to put the drive on the boat today and it gets hung up about 1 inch before getting to the mating surface on the gimbal housing. Tried three times and checked for whatever could be holding up and saw nothing. Now it's caught on something in there and for the life of me it won't come back out. I'm a mechanic by trade and not a beginner by any means, Just looking for a few suggestions from people that have maybe run into this before. Help guys, I can use it. and yes, it is in the forward position

Re: alpha one Gen II HELP!

I feel your pain...Not on an alpha, but a Mustang Clutch. It was a bur on the spline. In the effort of removing the alignment pin, I figured I must've knocked it out of alignment just enough..Because when i went to slide the transimission up and into the bell housing,it stopped about a half inch shy. I then tried to remove it. I ended-up having to call-in my bud and use a pry bar behind the transimission.
I really didn't want to do that, but couldn't think of anything else to try.

When I got it back down, the spline had a bur no bigger than .040" that was the culprit all allong!! I took a file to it, cleaned it up as best I could, re-alligned the flexplate, and it slid home on the first grunt.
I hope that's all it is, check the spline teeth.Feeling is the best way.Any burs must be removed, or it'll never go on (if they're new anyway).
Good luck.

Re: alpha one Gen II HELP!

I know you already said it is in forward, but stick your head down to where the speedo tube hooks up and look behind that to make sure that the shift assmbly are lined up, maybe there are being pushed aside when your shoving the drive on,
you should see that they are lined up and that will eliminate that aspect, then you can check to see if your alingment is good,, did the drive come off real easy or did you have to pry it off when you removed it?? just some thoughts,, good luck and don't take that 6x6 and pound it on!! it should go on easy,,, :D

Re: alpha one Gen II HELP!

thanks guys, I think it's a misaligned coupling and gimbal bearing. The pain is, the old engine sprayed so much salt water all over the adjusters I am going to have fun setting it back up
