I believe I have an Alpha One outdrive but I'm having trouble matching the numbers.

My outdrive only says 1.98r and A301486.
I know the 1.98r is the gear ratio.
Not sure what the A301486 is but all parts lookups say this serial number range.

R/MR/ALPHA ONE 1983-1990 Serial#6225577 AND UP

The boat is a 1988 so I assume this has to be the drive I have but would like to confirm before I order a bunch of parts.

Re: Alpha One Identification

Make sure you are looking at the serial number for the outdrive. There are 3 numbers for the units as the factory installs. One for the engine, one for the bell housing assembly and one for the drive unit. I ran into the same issue thinking the serial number stamped on the top of the bell housing was the drive number. It had long been lost off the drive. Fortunately, the previous owner had the wherewithall to put a tag on the carb cover identifying all three units.

The MR/alpha is the same drive. They just changed the name from MR to alpha. If your gear ratio is the same it's an easy swap. If the gear ratio is different...just swap props. The MR/alpha have the square top.

Re: Alpha One Identification

I have both the Engine serial and the transom serial, but I believe the outdrive serial is the one I am missing.
All that is on the outdrive are those 2 numbers that are stamped into the left side of the outdrive case.

if A301486 is stamped on the port side of the outdrive, then this is the s/n for the drive

just a simple prop change will not save your drive from destruction due to improper gear ratio, it will just cause the engine to run at the proper wot rpm

make sure you use the same gear ratio for new gears in the upper
