Heres the picture. I was able to get my phone down there and snap a perfect pic of the culprit. I'm able to get my finger up and over the "waterfall" and can feel a puddle of water. So what you see here the "waterfall" from the "lake" above. You can see the water gathering, this is as low as the bilge pumps can get the water. For reference, the drain plug is somewhere under the leak.
Before I put the boat in the water, I replace the impeller. During that process I looked pretty damn close at the bellows. The exhaust on has a rip in it, doesn't matter. The other two looked to be in much much better shape and there was no visible damage. It looked as if someone had recently replaced the shift cable bellow and driveline bellow, but left the exhaust as is. I then put the outdrive back on, and put it in its slip.
History: Bought the boat at the end of last summer. Put it away for the winter. Brought it back out 2 weeks ago to get it ready for the marina. Did impeller (cause there was zero water coming out exhaust). Put boat in its slip, to find this problem.
I would guess its leaking a gallon every 2 or 3 hours. Very much a guess. I fixed the non working bilge pumps as a result (2 of the 3 weren't working). Necessity is the mother of fixing in this case.
I pulling the boat back out in the next couple days to fix this problem.
So, my question. The problem is isolated to the outdrive. If it is NOT the bellows (could be still), then what are some other culprits? The water seems to be just gathering at the bottom of the (gimbal housing?), meaning its either leaking down low, or its dripping from somewhere above. Point being that there's no good way to tell where the water is coming from based on the fact that its puddling at the bottom.
I guess it could partially be the drain plug, but I cranked it down with a wrench before we put it in the water. Do brass drain plugs ever leak?
Boat is a 1991 Sea Ray 220DA. 5.0 mercruiser. Alpha 1 (NOT gen 2)
