Heres the picture. I was able to get my phone down there and snap a perfect pic of the culprit. I'm able to get my finger up and over the "waterfall" and can feel a puddle of water. So what you see here the "waterfall" from the "lake" above. You can see the water gathering, this is as low as the bilge pumps can get the water. For reference, the drain plug is somewhere under the leak.

Before I put the boat in the water, I replace the impeller. During that process I looked pretty damn close at the bellows. The exhaust on has a rip in it, doesn't matter. The other two looked to be in much much better shape and there was no visible damage. It looked as if someone had recently replaced the shift cable bellow and driveline bellow, but left the exhaust as is. I then put the outdrive back on, and put it in its slip.

History: Bought the boat at the end of last summer. Put it away for the winter. Brought it back out 2 weeks ago to get it ready for the marina. Did impeller (cause there was zero water coming out exhaust). Put boat in its slip, to find this problem.

I would guess its leaking a gallon every 2 or 3 hours. Very much a guess. I fixed the non working bilge pumps as a result (2 of the 3 weren't working). Necessity is the mother of fixing in this case.

I pulling the boat back out in the next couple days to fix this problem.

So, my question. The problem is isolated to the outdrive. If it is NOT the bellows (could be still), then what are some other culprits? The water seems to be just gathering at the bottom of the (gimbal housing?), meaning its either leaking down low, or its dripping from somewhere above. Point being that there's no good way to tell where the water is coming from based on the fact that its puddling at the bottom.

I guess it could partially be the drain plug, but I cranked it down with a wrench before we put it in the water. Do brass drain plugs ever leak?

Boat is a 1991 Sea Ray 220DA. 5.0 mercruiser. Alpha 1 (NOT gen 2)

i'm not the pro here, but since no ones chimed in. i will.
pull the drive and see if there's water in the bellows. that'll confirm that it's not coming from there.
only thing i can think of is after that is. down low at the bottom of the gimble housing, the only thing i'm aware of to leak is the exhaust y pipe.
or i suppose it could be a broke seal between the gimble housing and the boat. (soft, rotted transom?)
best i can do for ya. maybe others will come by with a better comment.
worse comes to worse. ya can pull the engine and then put it back in the water and have a better chance of seeing where the water is coming in at.

When there is no water in the UJ belows, check your shift cable bellows for a leak.

Pulling boat tomorrow, hopefully its not a rotten transom.. I may cry if thats the case.

I'm hoping it's something stupid and/or easy to fix.

It's a boat. Of course it won't be easy to fix... :D ;)

when you have the boat out of the water, run it on muffs and see if the leak returns, this would indicate a y-pipe leak

there is a gasket that seals the trim hose manifold/block on the bottom (outside) of the gimble housing

excess corrosion or a faulty gasket could also cause the leak you have

Have you checked the shift cable boot?

Well the shift cable boot was the culprit. Let me rephrase, was one of the culprits. I put all new bellows on, filled the bilge up with water while bow was lifted, and water leaked out of the exhaust ports. Fock. Looks like I'm pulling the motor.

While its out, is there anything else I should replace?

Update-

Ended up wanting to reinstall the Y pipe. Then I saw the Y pipe.

THAT is exactly why we grow them big trees around here. :joyous:
What are you planning with the block-off plate? Thru-Hull?

Yessir. I was going back and forth about doing a thru hull, but the ypipe made the decision for me. Going through hull is going to be less $$ than a ypipe.

I'd still go back to a pipe. You should be able to pick up a used one in good condition for not too many $$. You may find the noise (read 'constant droning') of thru-hull annoying after the first 5 minutes or so....

If it ends up being too much, I'll have some 90's welded on so the exhaust goes into the water, at least at low speeds. The motor is back in now. Really didn't want to wait a week for a y pipe while Ii'm paying for a slip at the marina

Since you've gone that far and have done all the hard part, I would go ahead and pull the gimble housing, inspect, clean, new seal, be done with it. More than likely, your going to put it back together and its going to continue to leak.
I have recently completed about three boats of exactly what you are doing. One rebuild had both of the bottom bolt holes of the y-pipe completely corroded away, like yours, but that was NOT where there leak was coming from.
If you pull the housing, you will probably find the bottom bolts rusted away. That indicates standing moisture in the wood. Very, very common issue.
Just my 2cents worth...

I very very seriously considered taking it completely apart to do the transom seal. Before we dropped the motor back in I filled the bilge to just under the u joint bellow and it didn't leak a drop after sitting there for 3 hours.

Thats good enough to get me through at least this summer. If it continues to leak, it will be a very very small leak. And well, then I have a winter project. Thought about yanking the motor for winter anyways to clean the engine and engine compartment more thoroughly and put pretty new hardware every where.

Well the thru hull is in. Pic is from test fit.

Its my understanding that while running on muffs the same amount of water isn't going to come out of each tip. Also more vapor can come out one than the other. In my case I have more water coming out one, and more vapor coming out the other. I'm going to say this is all normal?

Also, one side sounds just a little different. I don't know how to describe it though. Almost like a louder thud or pop every couple seconds. Any input?

Update, after a little more running on muffs, the thud sound comes from both sides, and seems to go away after water gets through the system and starts coming out the exhaust
