I maybe over thinking things, but I'm sure someone can help me out.

Ok.. I had to replace my upper unit on my 1985 WellCraft AftCabin 230. I got the upper reinstalled with a rebuilt unit. When we tried to re-install the lower unit we keep running into trouble. I've been trying to re-install it according to the manual, attached is a copy.

So, my shift leveler is in the forward position. I not for sure what gear my lower unit is in. According to the manual, if I turn the Shift Shaft clockwise, then the lower unit is in reverse.

My questions;

1. Does my shift lever need to be in the forward or reverse position?

2. Does my lower unit need to be in the reverse position (Shift Shaft) when re-installing it?

Can someone set me straight? Or am I really over thinking things?

So. My lower unit shift shaft by rotating it clockwise, does does it put it in forward gear?

yes; while holding the lower unit shift shaft clockwise so it is pointing straight fore/aft and turning the prop/prop shaft counter-clockwise it will be in forward. To aid in holding it in forward, wrap a bungee cord around the prop.

Just curious...why did you select the "counter-rotating" section of the manual to do this work?

Re: Alpha One - Lower Unit Reinstall

Thank you everyone. I did exactly what you suggested Mark and everything went together. Ready to put it back on the water tomorrow.

Just curious...why did you select the "counter-rotating" section of the manual to do this work? I don't have a complete manual, just bits and pieces of a manual.

Again, thanks for everyone's help.

We can get you a complete manual here (for both yoru engine and your drive), if you are interested.
