I winterized my boat over the weekend and when I filled the outdrive I was about 10-12oz. shy of using the 64 oz. it says that it takes. The outdrive is an 06 Alpha 1. I drained the sight res. (dont know actual name) on the engine through the disconnect on the back of the engine so the tank was empty. I was just wanting to know if this is normal or if I messed up some where on the way and need to do again in the spring.

Did you fill from the bottom of the drive? If so, you're probably OK. Double check after the first run of next season, you may have to top off the reservoir (site thing).

Yes, I filled from the bottom. My first boat had an OMC and filled through the top. So on my first merc. I filled through the res. and let it drain in the outdrive. Lucky for me I took it to the dealer to check allignment and a new impellor and he filled it up right. Since I have bought all the manuals and I get on this site about every night so I can do most of the maint. myself. Thanks for the response. Walt

If you pumped it in from the bottom till it came out the vent plug, then you are good.

Just reconnect the resevior and fill it to the line. Keep the bottle of "extra" oil in the boat, when you get out on the water next year and the drive heats up for the first time it will "burp" the air out and you will need to top off one more time.

I will do that. After having the boat out the first time after I bought it the disconnect came apart on the lake and leaked the res. into my bilge. Its amazing how that little amount of oil can make a mess in the bilge through the ski locker.I keep putting bilge cleaner in it and its getting better but I still find some every once in a while. I guess my point is I had all the oil for the boat in my truck so I knew they would be there when I needed it. It was right where I left it in my truck box.I put it all in the boat while on the loading ramp to go home.
