Alpha One Outdrive Dead-Replacement Options?

Hi,
I have a 1975 18' Starcraft with a 1993 Alpha One 3.0 LX Engine (4 Cyl). My outdrive just went south with several gears in both the upper and lower housing destroyed. The gear ratio on the outdrive is 1:98. I wanted to find out what my repalcement options were when searching craigslist, eBay, etc for a new or used outdrive. Will a replacement 1:98 Gen 1, Gen 2, Alpha, Pre-Alpha all fit as direct replacements or do I need a specific one? The transom assembly I believe is the original for the 1975 boat.
Thanks in advance,
Ron

If you have the original transom assy., you need an Alpha 1 gen 1......
You can get an SEI aftermarket with a three year warranty off of ebay for $1195 shipped......:)

Any drawbacks to the Generation I or should I consider swapping the transom? Also, how do I confirm a Generation I Alpha Transom? I know the lower housing was Alpha non Generation I but I think the upper housing was the original 1975 Gen I.
Thanks,
Ron

The Improvements in the Gen.II over the Alpha are Minimal at Best,.........
Certainly Not worth the investment to replace the Transom Assembly..........

The Alpha 1 is a Proven design,+ will suit your needs, Just Fine........

Just to clarify, is there a difference between an Alpha One and a Alpha One Generation 1? I assume you meant the Gen 1 was ok for my needs.
Thanks!

No....
The difference would be from gen 1 to gen 2.....
You need gen 1......;)

Ok, thanks Haut!

Tommays-Looks like the previous owner only updated the engine and maybe the lower housing.

Re: Alpha One Outdrive Dead-Replacement Options?

I posted to craigslist to see what my options were for a used outdrive. Someone contacted me who had a pre-Alpha outdrive. Mine was an Alpha, would there be any issues with this fitting?

Not sure I am going to go this route but paying over a thousand for a new aftermarket pains me since it is an older boat. I may break down though :)

Yes, it will fit.....;)
The new one comes with a three year warranty....
Unless the craigslist one is real cheap.....
Don't forget that any pre alpha is at least 25 -30 years old.....;)

Re: Alpha One Outdrive Dead-Replacement Options?

I'm in the same situation. My outdrive is dead and I will be closer to $1500 than $1000 once all is said and done, but putting a 20-30 year old piece of equipment with an unknown history on to save a little bit of money up front seems like a bad investment to me. I searched for feedback on the Sterndrive Engineering units and they have a pretty good overall reputation, the worst thing being a short history to look at. Considering they are brand new units with a three year warranty, that is a small premium to pay for a guaranteed good piece of equipment. If it blows up on you after three years it is more likely due to your own negligence rather than SEI's, and it would likely happen faster with a used unit.

Just my $.02

I don't disagree with you guys. The boat however is a 1975 18' Starcraft. Nice classic look but I only paid 2k for it, so that is more than 1/2 the price of the boat. Decisions, decisions.... :)

Now you're starting to see why they say that cheap boats aren't so cheap.

The prices of repairs and parts are NOT based on how much you paid for the boat.

FREE boats are usually way over priced.

All good points. I have no complaints, it has served me well for almost 5 years and has been a great boat.

Re: Alpha One Outdrive Dead-Replacement Options?

I am new to the Forums.
I am in the same situation (total outdrive disaster).
I have found re-built Mercruiser Alpha One, type 1, parts to be very expensive. My boat is 20+ years old and am curious if "Sterndrive Solutions" aftermarket is a good product. I assume that it is, from what I have investigated and seen their ads here on iBOATS.com.
It sure looks like (and I want to believe that it is) a saving grace to me...
Any experiences???
