This weekend when I was going to put my Bayliner 185 away I had an issue trying to raise the outdrive. It went down with no problem, but when I would attempt to raise it I would hear a click coming from the rear of the boat but nothing would happen. After several minutes and many attempts, it eventually raised. Any ideas why this might be occurring? I didn't have any problems lowering the unit. I have not made a second attempt yet to see if the problem occurs again.

My idea would be the solenoid on the 'up' circuit of the trim pump is failing. It is a fairly easy fix if you have good access to the pump. $15 should do it.

Yup, I bet if you disconnect the battery and clean all the connections it will likely work again.

What you're probably hearing is the relay closing but the current is not flowing due to internal corrosion. I had the same problem several years ago on an older MC-1. "Clink, Click, Click finally hummm." Have someone hit the up button while you have your hand on the relay on the side of the pump motor. You can feel the clicking vibration in the relay to verify. My relay had four rivets holding it together. I drilled the rivets out and opened up the relay. There is a thick metal plate that shorts the contacts when power is applied. It was corroded. I simply cleaned it and slimmed it with a thin coating of dielectric grease. Reassembled using four small stainless steel bolts where the rivets were. It was still working fine when I decommissioned the boat seven years later. Of course the Mercruiser fix is to replace the relay. But I enjoy "fixing" things.

Thanks for the information and suggestions, everyone. I took the boat out today and it worked flawlessly. So I'm not sure if I'm dealing with corrosion or if it was just "stuck" from the boat sitting around too long. Maybe a combo of both, so I will keep these notes in mind for the future, I'm sure it's probably going to need cleaning maintenance before too long.
