ok, my recent purchase has a problem, the lower shift-shaft is 180 off, so no reverse!!previous owner had the lower rebuilt this winter and he obivously did not water test it. from microfishes i've looked at the shaft has a roll pin in it to index it, can i drop the gearcase and rotate the shaft??? will it rotate??? from what i can tell just pulling the out-drive wont work,i've got to drop the case.

Re: alpha-one question-shift shaft

Alpha-one is a MerCruiser.

Start by removing the outdrive. There is a shifting mechanism in there that might not be right. The roller on the lever should ride inside of two rails on the slide. If that's not right, it won't shift right.

The other possibility is that the splined shift shaft is off by a spline. To fix that you need to separate the lower gearcase from the upper gearcase. That can be done with the drive mounted on the boat.

A manual would be invaluable for either of these.
