Alpha One shifting Issues

Hello ladies and gents,

I recently had to replace my engine due to a prolonged exposure in salt water that was not disclosed upon purchase (previous owner said very little salt water emmersion, after cracking the block and pulling it all apart I find that hard to believe.) The new engine is set and just waiting on new manifolds and risers to come in this week (hopefully). I went to put the out drive together today after replacing the impeller. I shifted lower unit into gear using the splined shift control, and checking by rotating the propeller CLOCKWISE. Well, I got it all together and now it seems there is more than I anticipated with all of this. The shifter at the helm is in forward gear, the lower unit shift foot is in the fore and aft straight position and the fork and cable is extended and joined. Now when I put the controll lever to NUETRAL at the helm,it does not put the engine in nuetral . It is stuck at that point. With the control lever all the way in forward, I can rotate the propeller CLOCKWISE with a small click to it. ( I have not been forcing it, just gently turning it). When I put my finger on the shift foot on the outdrive and push it COUNTERCLOCKWISE (very minimal effort needed here) and try to rotate the prop CLOCKWISE it is siezed and COUNTERCLOCKWISE clicks. I did a bit of reading on here, and I think I may have the shifting backwards. Seems like I may be in reverse?? Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have been flipping (Adobe style) through the pages of my OEM service manual to no avail as of yet. I am deploying in 3 weeks and i would like to enjoy the water a bit before heading to the great desert of loathing and despair. Thanks in advance everyone!!

Re: Alpha One shifting Issues

i believe that is normal as mine is the same i put the out drive together yesterday. foot forward it will spin in one direction with a clicking noise and lock in the other direction.turn the foot counterclockwise to reverse and it should do the same but in opposite direction. the clicking you here is to allow the drive to over run the prop if you hit something, so it minimizes damage. hope you get a little boating in before you go, and thanks for what yous do in the desert.

Ok, I pulled the lower end off, I was definitely backwards. I will be putting it together here shortly and see what happens. Oh, I have a Gen 1 Alpha, and it has the groove for the O-ring on the driveshaft going from the lower unit to the upper unit. I know I didnt pull it off, and I have read the new style does not even have the groove. Do I need to put one in there? Thanks again Gents!
