I was wondering what performance hit, am i taking with a lower unit that has a chuck of the skeg missing?

The bottom is there, but there is a half moon section missing from the middle of the skeg.

Look roughly like this..

Thanks for reading...

Wonder how that happened???

Shouldn't effect much performance wise but consider a skeg guard.

Great link! That is on the short list to be ordered. Not sure if it will be done before season ends here. If there is not a major issue with using it as is, will wait until the restoration over the winter.

Besides the way things are looking there will be no boating for the next few weeks up here anyway, darn rain and flooding, the entire chain of lakes is still no wake, and looks like it will be for awhile still. :(

My .02...

I've never been a big fan of the skeg guards. In you your case, it looks like a rock tried to slide between the prop and the skeg. The weakest component lost.

What happens when you have a stainless prop and a stainless skeg guard? Depends on the circumstance, but it increases the chance that something happens to other parts such as the propshaft. I'd rather pay for a skeg repair like yours (or live with it), than to pay for a propshaft or other internals that lose that battle.

If you do a search on skegg grards there's also a company that has one made of carbon fiber that you glue or epoxy on.

Heck - there's not even a minor issue with using it as is. Leave it alone and go boating! ;)
