I put a new water pump in my 1990 Mariah with a 5.7L Alpha One. I purchased the required parts and went to install them and found out the bottom pump housing would not fit. I when back to the marina with the old part and found out that I have an Alpha One SS, can anyone tell me what the diffrence between an Alpha One SS and Alpha One is?

Thanks

Re: Alpha One SS ??????

I ended up with the correct part. I was just wondering what an Alpha One SS was? Is it a special unit, what makes it diffrent from a standard Alpha One? I have searched, but can not find any information on them other than they were made from 1986 - 1989.

Gear ratio was 1.32:1, they were used behind big blocks and didn't hold up very well unless pampered. Bravos were introduced to handle the higher power engines in '89.

Re: Alpha One SS ??????

Mine is stamped with a 1:1.5 gear ratio and is attahced to a small block 5.7L (orginal to the boat). Are there any specific chariteristics that I can look at the would tell me that I have an SS or a Standard Alpha One?

If I have a SS, I am worried if anythign ever happens due to the limited number of years they were produced. Were they prone to any failures?

Sorry for all the questions

Ayuh,... The SS lower case is much more tapered with a long nose,+ lower water pickups...
