Hey everyone,

Mercruiser Alpha One outdrive. One of my trim cylinders leaks a little bit of fluid out of it through one of the seals. Don’t think it helps out in lifting the drive either (I think the other side is doing all of the work).

Is it possible to rebuild the trim cylinder? Are kits sold to do this (are they pricey)? If so, how difficult is it to rebuild one? Any special tools required?

The problem with leaking a little fluid is really if it is also sucking in water (yes,I am disreguarding pollution, for point of discussion).Definetly not good.

I do not rebuild them.My toughts are,one spec of dirt and the repair fails. Also the seals rarely fail.So if the piston is bad,how far do you go on the rebuild.

New cylinders run just about $370,so if you can do the work ...... maybe. The kits are just over $100.But I don't see the actual piston listed.

These are also available aftermarket.

Just some options for you.

I'm thinking that it just blew a seal. I didn't realize that the kits were so expensive.

Try ebasicpower.com - I bought complete new cylinder assemblies for $215 ea. Just bolt 'em on, hook up the hydraulics & bleed the system. Make sure you get the right length - there were 2 versions that are about 5/8" different. Give the existing numbers to them & they can cross ref.
