Alpha outdrive stud came off with nut. Never saw this before???

1988 alpha drive serviced every other season.Upon splitting the drive for servicing while loosening the 2 recessed nuts at midpoint on the drive ,one of the nuts must have stopped turning and the entire stud unscrewed from the lower.Been doing my own drive servicing for over 30 years and never encountered this before..Was planning on double nutting the stud to screw it back in and was planning on using some locktite on the threads unless someone tells me a better way to do it?? 1st time for everything..... That's what happened to me on a used drive I bought. I did the same thing but also cleaned the nut side threads with a chaser and used a new nut.

only thing to add is follow the loctitie cure time on the tech data sheet for which ever thread locker you are using. You can find them online but usually 24 hrs will let it set up

My Locktite is too old to trust, got to buy a new one or maybe use super glue???? Probably a bad idea but Im sure someone has used it before Lol .Charlie

Super glue is when you skin your knuckle and need to glue the skin back…not making that up.
Jfc are we really limited by our loctite budget?

Standard super glue sets up instantly under very slight pressure. If you use it on a threaded joint it will set up before you the threads all the way in.

Dunno that I'd go this route. I think everyone is assuming you're replacing the stud. By the super glue comment... You are going to try to reuse?

Yes planning to reuse the stud.It came out very clean and seems like it will screw back in fine. It appears that there was some crusty barnacle on the top of the nut which didn't want to let the nut turn so everything turned.Charlie

If it were me......cleanup all the threads, including running a tap into the casting, loctite does not work well in a crappy enviornment, get the crud
out ! Use blue loctite and reassemble.

Threads were super clean but I brushed them up anyway. Dont have a tap so running my gun brush in and out the casting and will put it on a drill .I will get it cleaned up good before reassemble. Charlie

Since those nuts are nylocs, I would use the Locktite RED on those studs, so they don't back out again., unless you want them to by using some heat.

Lolcktite RED is a more permanent thread locker??

I'd want to free up the stuck nut before screwing the stud back or good shot of it happening again.

Not sure the red is rated as wateroroof....I know the blue stuff is...
If properly used, have never had the blue stuff release unless I wanted it to and been using it for close to 40 years. Proper install means everything !

Our equipment is subject to extreme vibration. Nothing leaves the factory w/o some sort of thread locker.

Have yet to run into a thread locker that will withstand heat and or an impact wrench.
