Alpha Shift problem

I'm helping a buddy with a 1986 3.0 Liter Mercruiser w/alpha one drive.
I don't have the serial numbers handy.

My friend diassembled the drive to change the water pump and since re-installing, the boat will not shift into reverse when the outdrive is bolted onto the boat. Off the boat it shifts by hand fine. It was working fine before he disassembled it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

He missed keeping the shift mechanisms aligned either when he broke it in half, or when installed back on the boat.

Thanks for the quick reply sickwilly.

I'm a Volvo guy, but I've worked on a few Mercruisers. Are you referring to the splined shaft that connects to the shift mechanism (Oval piece) that slides in to the gimbel housing?

Will I need to break the drive apart again to re-align this?

Ayuh,....
Then Hold the lower unit in Forward as it's reassembled...
It slipped into Neutral when it was done before...
