I have just emptied my alpha stern drive on a '85 sea ray and so far i've put in a little less than 1 quart of new oil. It seems like its at its max because when i put more in, it overflows. The guy at the shop told me the capacity was 1 1/2 quarts but i'm starting to doubt that. Did i not empty the stern drive completely? or does it take a while for the oil to get through all the gears? or....

thanks for your time.

Did you pump in the oil in from the drain(up)?

Jim

Pump from the bottom hole until it runs out top is 32 ounces. If you have a resevoir bottle inside the boat, under the motor cover,a little more.
Don't think you have the resevoir.
DHP

Sorry to jump on this thread, but it is related. I am getting ready to do the exact same job on my alpha, and am wondering how you pump from the bottom without it all leaking back out? Do you have to purchase a special adapter that threads in?

Yes. They sell a pump that mounts on the bottle and screws in the lower plug. Pump until it comes out the top and install upper screw. If you have a res. bottle, continue pumping until it reaches the bottle. Install lower plug. Go fishing....

Fill the gearcase until it runs out of the top plug and then cap it off.Top the resivoir off as needed.Do not overfill that gearcase or you will blow a u joint driveshaft seal. That resivior mantains that gearoil at the right level by gravity flow but will not regulate the pressure generated by an overfull gearcase.

Either way you end up with the same result. The air pocket at the top of the upper case will stay there even if you fill the res. from the bottom up, as the res. tube is located lower than the upper plug on the drive.
