I helping a friend with his 1988 Alpha drive. We are replacing the trim senders. The drive has the old style retaining clip with 2 screws. We bent an offset 7/16 wrench per achris note in another post to remove the top screw. What a pain. Is it possible to use the new style retainer with only the bottom screw when we re-install the new switches, or must you stick with the style that is on there?

Hi I am a new member to this forum. I have did some research on this clamp and people say per the Mercruiser School to just leave top bolt out. That's what I plan to do when changing mine. Please if some one with more knowledge correct me if that is not a wise thing to do.

If the retainer is free of corrosion and still solid, use one screw. The wires don't need alot of pressure to keep them seated but some.

That's great news. Should I put some perfect seal in the wires where they seat? I'm worried about water coming through the transom. Or am I just over-thinking it.
