I need some help putting my water pump back on. Seloc (ugg) has no torque value. Mercstuff says 60-90 LBS ????? This has got to be a typo. I started torqueing, very carefully, but I think I am pulling the studs out. I searched other posts and tommays posted INCH pounds, with a link to mercstuff, water pump install, which again says 60-90 lbs. Below are the posts I read.

you have to missing a gasket or something usally the bolts only get tightened in inch pounds

http://mercstuff.com/waterpumpinst.htm

take a look here and see how it matches up with what you doing the online manuals only cover and alpha i dont no how a pre is different

tommays

gspig, just wondering, did ya put the stainless face plate on the correct way. i think the lip faces down, per clymers. also the torque values are. back screw, 15-20 inch lbs, two middle nuts to 25-30 inch lbs. and the front nut to 35-40 inch lbs. per vol. 2 merc. service manual. water pump- mercruiser 1 thru 165 and 888, reassembly. i know ya put the hose to it. but did you look for anything blocking from the pick up slots in the lower up to the waterpump. sand? impeller pieces? believe ya should be able to look down the water pump base and see light i think.. hope ya find yer problem.......

getting tired. OK inch pounds, 60-90, converts to 7.5 ft lb max. can that be correct?

Man I know its not a piano, but if you knew what I've been dealing with............I was just afraid the impeller wouldn't seat, with two gaskets, and a plate, ya know. And I didn't want to over torque it and clamp down on the impeller.... I took it apart and put it back together, made it tight enough. I could still spin the shaft by hand, with drag. Thanks guys!!!

If you think you were pulling the studs out, you better check them before you put it together the rest of the way. You may have also damaged the pump housing itself. It's only plastic.
There are also 3 different sized studs and screws.
Use the manual at the link below before you destroy eveything.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf
