rebars - if your'e getting down 3/16" you may need to use a little fatter bar - the nuts are getting close to the point where they will come off the studs. Keep crankin'em. :|

Re: Alpha1 lower unit removal

stevieray: it finally came loose yesterday. once it released, the upper unit came right off. I kept building up heavy washers on top of the nuts and used pairs of nylon door shims as wedges between the front bolt and the shift shaft. I also would occassionally snug up the back bolts for extra prying action on the front bolt.

Now I am trying to figure out just what I have. There was a lot of rusted metal flakes built up around the water pump, filling the pockets between the pump and housing. Also, it looks like the lower shift shaft bushing is missing. Finally, the water pump house looks different from the manual's pictures in that it does not have a centrifical slinger on top.

Looks like the slinger was left off by whomever worked on it last. It's just a rubber ring that slides over the drive shaft & pushes snug against the pump housing. Buy a rebuild kit for the pump & it'll have all the parts you need (gaskets, impeller, o-rings, etc). Shift shaft seal looks ok (although quite corroded). If there's no apparent gear lube seeping around it, I'd leave it be.
Make sure to replace the quad ring that seals the oil passage between the upper & lower cases (starboard side) - that's a commonly missed item. One comes in the pump kit. Also, definitely check out the manifolds & risers - they have lost quite a bit of metal. Have fun!

Thanks stevieray. Replacing the manifolds and risers was the first thing I did with this boat. I will double check the Y-pipes and the lower unit exhaust passages to make sure there is nothing blocking the flow.
