Help! Was back flushing water intake hose and got out of the boat to see how the water was coming out. Noticed a stream of water coming out of where the front nut/stud from lower unit bolts to the upper unit. Got to looking and found a round hole just behind the grounding plate. Is that supposed to be there (open) or should it be plugged w/bolt? Could not any reference to this hole in my manual. Was going to take the boat out on Lake Michigan, but not sure if I should until I know what's what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a hard time picturing what nut/stud you are talking about, but most of the lower unit is hollow above the gearset, and if you are pressuring it with the muffs, and have a hole in it, its going to leak water. Can you post a picture? If not, does the hole look like its in a structural place? If its just a small hole in the lower, not structural, not leaking oil etc, I would just patch it and go.

Ayuh,...

What are you calling the Grounding Plate,..??

Were you doing this with the Lower Unit still installed onto the Upper Unit,..??

Re: alphaone outdrive

I had removed the lower unit to replace impeller, put back together, everything went fine. It is where the front stud on the lower unit goes into the upper unit. There is a tear shaped grounding plate that the stud goes thru, which in turn is secured to the upper unit w/a screw. Then just behind that is a hole 3/8" in diameter. I was goint to plug it but just wanted to make sure that is the way to go.

The "grounding plate" is part of the grounding circuit, tear shaped w,2 holes, one for the stud coming off of the lower unit, the other is for a screw that holds the plate in place. I had removed the lower unit and had put it back together w/the upper unit. the stud is just one of the stud that secure the lower unit to the upper and it is in the front of lower unit. Hard to get at when together, had to raise outdrive for trailering just to get at it.
