I have a Volvo Penta AQ131D with the Solex Downdraft Carb. I have had the carb rebuilt and it still doesn't work properly. I would like to switch the carb with another similar or something that is compatible iwth the engine that I can buy new. I have tried to find other Solex carbs like the one that is on the boat now, but have had no luck finding one that is new. Thanks. Dennis Main issue is that I have switched to electronic ignition, boat would start fine in driveway, went to take it out after a long period sitting (few weeks), it would'nt start, the jet that sprays gas is misting occasionally and not streaming like it did previously when it started with not issues.

Probably just needs a good cleaning.

Get a kit and go through it, the acc pump diaphragm should be changed and check all the parts the pump spring may be corroded.

I think there is a Webber conversion available but these Solex carbs are pretty simple and reliable if set up correctly

I'd agree that these carbs usually work quite well as long as everything is clean and you have good gas. There's no choke so they are cold blooded. If it's not squirting out of the accel jet properly, then it probably needs to be taken apart and have all the passages cleaned out really well. Aftermarket kits with gaskets and accel pump diaphram are only $30 on ebay.

You probably won't find any new but you see them on ebay once in awhile. Prices go from reasonable to ridiculous. Once in awhile you see the webber conversion carb and manifold kits also but, as Robj mentioned, you have to really want it!

As long as carbs have cast iron base plates, they can be rebuilt a dozen times. Some of the later carbs (prior to going to fuel injection) had aluminum base plates that wouldn't hold up.

I once rebuilt a rather complicated carb for my old RX7. I threw away 7 little leftover metal pieces, however it still ran just great.

Most carb rebuilds don't even take much knowledge--just a good memory on where the parts came from and a spray can of carb. cleaner.

We're now having carb problems stemming to 90/10 gasoline. The fuel just breaks down so fast if not used promptly. In the breakdown, acids are produced which attacks anything that's rubber in the fuel system. This is where many carb. problems in boats are coming from. Carbs have to be cleaned relatively often--especially two stroke carbs.

Water water everywhere......

My carb had corrosion on the float pivot pin limiting travel, got it working great by taking off a little green power from the brass pin...
