Alternative for Rubber Prop Nut

I had a nice row back yesterday (of course against the wind) when the rubber drive pin retainer nut & pin separated from my 62 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman. I'm having a hard time finding the part on the internet & I'm wondering if there is a viable alternate solution. The rubber part always struck me as an engineering weak link on this setup. Does a stainless steel hose clamp work OK? Is there some other cheap hardware store solution?

Part # 0303365 Should do it from a dealer - around 5 or 6 dollars. Parts Example

or, try here and scroll to bottom of price list to order: Prop Parts

Thanks! I could not get a match searching the first link parts site but the second site had the parts listed. The tricky part was finding out what the parts names are. I called them retainer nut, rubber nut, shear pin, etc, but they are actually a "cap" and "drive pin". I'm planning on ordering them from the store at the 2nd site listed. My original question stands though; I wonder if anyone has come up with a low cost generic solution not requiring the original parts? Because I couldn't find "shear pins" for the engine I've been using homemade pins cut from a bronze rod purchased at the local hardware for a couple of bucks per foot. It worked well until the rubber cap came off.

I make my own pins too whenever possible. Yours ought to be 3/16" stainless rod cut to 15/16" lengths. OMC calls the pins "Drive Pins" since the rubber hub in the prop is supposed to provide protection.
As rubber parts and such dry up (no pun intended :) ) the aftermarket takes over pretty quickly. It's suprising the number of impellers, bumpers, grips, mouldings and other parts that are out there manufactured by cottage industries.
I've never had a problem with the cap, but on larger outboards they used a plastic cap that was pinned to the propshaft with a cotter pin. It wouldn't be much to rig up something similair.

The way to use the first reference when you know a part number is to put in the part number at the very top center of the home page and press "GO".

The SHEAR PIN was called a "DRIVE PIN", and was part #0302333.

The purpose of the shear pin was to take the shock of a struck object and protect the gears.

If the metal is too hard, functionality is lost and the gears can suffer destructive force. It's best to use the specified Drive Pin whenever possible.
