I agree with ezmobee on the over-ratedness. Granted its good stuff, not worth buying unless you have ALOT of fasteners or plan to use the whole tube.

You say you want to try wood glue, I tried using some PL I had left over when the 5200 tube hardened up on me. I just so happen had to take some screws out of the deck where I used the PL and the screws came right out no problem. If its going to be covered with fiberglass, I would use it. However, if the wood glue is going to be your only barrier for keeping water out then it would be a no-go for me. ;)

I feel the "permanent-ness" of 5200 is largely overrated. Anyway, I'd probably go with that Attwood stuff from Wally.

I agree. I coated my trim tabs screws - all of them - with 5200 for water proofing since I was out of 4200. Few months later, I had to take them out and I was prepared for a "fight" after the horror stories I read about 5200. I was surprised when each one of these screws came out easily using a regular - as opposed to impact - automatic screw driver.

Is there an equivalent of PL avalable in a small tube? I really don't want to walk into this shop and give them something they have to load into a caulking gun...I just don't think they will want to deal with it in that case.

Went to Lowe's...all they had was 5200 or PL in large tubes. Went to Walmart...they had Attwood 7200 in the small tube...got that. Thanks to everyone for your feedback!

I had some Gorilla Glue handy so last night I decided to test it. I fastened a small piece of 3/8" plywood to a short piece of 2x2 redwood and coated the screw and pilot hole with Gorilla Glue. 24 hours later that screw is not coming out using the same screw driver I used to fasten it. I suppose it may come out if I were to use a larger tipped screwdriver and really lay into it, but in any case, I won't be using GG anyway. I just hope the Attwood 7200 is not quite this strong.

Man, I hate to keep beating this topic up and second-guessing but in reading the package for the Attwood 7200, it says "Best suited for applications where a permanent bond is needed..." and "If installing an item that potentially needs to be removed, use Attwood Marine Silicone Sealant". This makes me a little nervous because the seats are going to be installed first thing tomorrow morning so I'm running out of time.

Re: Alternative to 3M 4200?

I've used 3M 5200, 4200, Attwood 7200 on screws, and all of them have been easy to remove with a screwsdriver, but I usually an using a cordless drill with a phillips bit.

I can understand why the Gorilla Glue was hard to remove, it's more of a "glue" than a sealant, kind of like epoxying the screw in...

Agree completely with fishrdan. Gorilla glue is pretty hardcore epoxy so I'm not surprised that held the screw in there tight (pretty glad to read that actually since I just recently used GG to set some screws on my boat that had worked themselves out). I really don't think that 7200 is going to cause you issues.

Just another voice here...

My experience with 5200 might be a little different. Even globs of it that have fallen onto my workbench have been next to impossible to remove.

At one point I attempted to sand smooth some 5200 that I used to seat/seal deck fasteners - barely doable.

That said, pretty much any adhesive/glue/sealant that already has been mentioned in this thread will accomplish the task at hand;)

Re: Alternative to 3M 4200?

Thanks everyone. The seat bases will be secured with 1/4" hex head lag bolts, which should be easier to break loose (if necesssary) from the bond with a socket wrench, than a slot or phillips head screw may be. In addition, in some cases the old seat base lag bolts did not secure into to a stringer, they just went thru the fiberglassed 5/8" plywood flooring and into empty space.

I guess I'll stick with the 7200.

Loctite 5570 is a close substitute for 3M 5200 except its not rated for below the water line. It WILL cure up in the tube after its been open. The 5200 I have isn't and I've been using my last tube off and on for the last month. Just stick a nail in the end of the tube with some 5200 all around it. Same way I treat PL premium.
