Today I noticed the post on my alternator is in bad shape. I took the rubber boot off and the connector just crumbled apart. The terminal on the wire is half gone and the post on the back of the alternator has burned through 2/3 of the post. The post seems to be part of the rectifier assembly which is about $50. Seems like a lot to replace one bolt, especially when I can just replace the entire alternator for $100.

Rectifier Part: http://www.aspwholesale.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1283

Can these bolts be replaced? I'm thinking of welding a new one on. If so, what material should it be? Brass, stainless, regular steel?

Anyone happen to have some junk alternator lying around that would sell the rectifier part?

Can't find any local alternator rebuild shops around.

Thats one good reason during layup and reading for the season to use liberal amounts of dialectric grease on all electrical connections. Read Bond-o 's signiture !

Try DB Electrical for a new alternator . . . that one looks like the 'Mando' style. It won't be much more $$$ than trying to fix what you got.

Take your alternators or starters to a real starter/alternator/elec.motor repair facility. Not an auto shop or marine shop, or parts store. They can rebuild better and for less cost than any cheap new offshore junk.

And worth finding when you find it. There is even the old fashioned ways of finding them, Phone book and yellow pages and asking friends.

Re: Alternator Burned Electrical Post

So I took the alternator apart today. I have rebuilt a few starter motors so figured this would be similiar. Now I am convinced I just need to buy a new one. Even if I replace the stud, or even the entire rectifier assy the entire thing is in very bad shape and needs to be replaced. The stator windings looks to be in pretty bad shape and probably will corrode out shortly. If I had taken the thing apart first, I wouldn't have ever asked here - its obvious it needs to be replaced.

I've tried looking for a rebuild shop in the past. I find it hard to believe they can rebuild it for cheaper than replacing it.

I'm either going to buy a replacement Mando or a cheaper one from db electrical. I have had bad luck with the db electrical starter on a seadoo in the past. Although everyone on the seadoo forums seemed to think the db electrical starters were junk. The reviews for mercruiser alternators have been very good. These alternators also won't get exposed to as much salt as the seadoo starter. I'm leaning towards Mando.
